The aim of cancer rehabilitation

Dementia is a disease of the brain, usually of a chronic or progressive nature, in which there is a disturbance of multiple higher cortical functions, which can affect memory, thinking, orientation, comprehension, calculation, learning capacity, and judgment.

Physiotherapy can help in promoting and maintaining mobility for people with dementia, and particularly has a vital role in end of life care, by managing positioning, seating and painful contractures.

An individual assessment can look at dementia related problems and work on a personalised programme that may include an exercise programme to promote muscles strength and flexibility, balance and help promote cognitive function through movement.

Meet the Team

Our physiotherapists are fully qualified and have over 30 years of experience between them.

I graduated from Leeds Metropolitan university in 2001 with a BSc honours in Physiotherapy.

My first job was at a District General hospital where I completed junior rotations in the core areas of physiotherapy. I moved hospitals and specialised in Neurological Physiotherapy where I worked in the acute, rehabilitation and community settings working in teams with other professionals. For the last few years I have been based in the community working with clients with a variety of conditions, helping to prevent hospital admissions by providing the care they need in their own home.

I have undertaken varied continual personal development and education including Bobath courses (for treating complex neurological patients) acupuncture, pain management, cancer rehabilitation, dementia, falls and for musculoskeletal conditions.

Outside of the NHS I have worked in an outpatient clinic seeing a variety of conditions including assessment and treatment for insurance companies for whiplash injuries and other work related injuries.  I have worked with case managers providing treatment and management for patients with head injuries and other complex conditions.

I am kept busy outside of work with 2 active kids and a dog.

I graduated in 2001 from Sheffield Hallam University with a BSc Honours in Physiotherapy. I then started my career in the NHS, completing various rotations in different specialties for 2 years, until taking up a senior post within a multi- disciplinary community rehabilitation team.

I have also gone on to work in GP clinics and at a hospice. I then took up post as a senior community physiotherapist, managing a varied a busy caseload of patients, including those with orthopaedic and neurological conditions.

I continue to do this on a part- time basis. In order to maintain my acute orthopaedic rehabilitation skills, I also work regularly on a busy NHS orthopaedic unit.

Outside of the NHS I work privately and in the past this has included providing clinical supervision to physiotherapy staff within a regional centre for independent living.
Since then, I have gone on to set up Regain, alongside my business partner Helen.

Throughout my career I have undertaken varied continual professional development, training and education, in areas including pain management, acupuncture, dementia, falls, musculoskeletal and neurological disorders, cancer and palliative care. This includes courses, study days, training, teaching and MSc level study at Sheffield Hallam University.

Outside of work, I enjoy the great outdoors, spending time on my allotment and walking my dog.
